Divas With Heart
May 04, 2008 at Radio City Music Hall
With Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Diana Ross and Gladys Knight.
Earlier last month, the singer Diana Ross made one of her regular pilgrimages to Canyon Ranch, the award-winning, 80,000-square-foot spa in Tucson.
“You can’t miss her—she has the huge ’fro,” one of the washed, waxed, plucked, scrubbed, stretched-out, rubbed-up and fiercely dieting guests was overheard remarking to friends. Ms. Ross is not one to scrape her locks back in a ponytail while working out, confirmed a source in the spa, who added that the diva likes the anti-aging treatment, a 50-minute facial that leaves skin “smooth, hydrated and radiant with golden glints,” as it’s described in Canyon Ranch literature.
Touch Her in the Morning! At Ritzy Spa, Diana Ross Submits to Supreme Spring Cleanse
Last night's performance by Ross was her second at the event, billed by Forbes 500 as the "third Biggest Event in the World".
Last year, Ross' performance was cut short to accommodate that night's headliner, Mary J Blige, who had to leave Tobago to fulfill contractual arrangements in the US.
Whitney Houston, who is working on making a comeback into the music industry after years of marital problems and drug abuse, is expected to arrive on the island at around 7 p.m. tonight.
THE Diva herself, Diana Ross, used a magazine to hide her face from media photographers and fans who stood at the Crown Point International Airport waiting to greet her yesterday morning.
Ross, who headlined last night's opening of the Plymouth Jazz Festival at the Plymouth Recreation Ground, arrived on a private jet at around 10.30 a.m.
A five-car convoy, including police escort, quickly whisked her away in a grey Mercedes Benz.
Some disappointed fans were heard asking: "But why is she hiding her face?"

Diana Ross delivers once again Diana Ross rules the night
Diana Ross delivered, what could only be described as a mind-blowing performance on the opening night of the Plymouth Jazz Festival in Tobago on Friday.
It seemed as if Ross' intention was to make it up to her fans who were disappointed after she was prematurely booted off the stage last year to accommodate hip-hop queen Mary J Blige's early departure from the island.
Ross paid a tribute of sorts to Trinidad and Tobago when she came out in a red shimmering gown with frills at the end, then making a quick change during her set, an act she is quite known for, into a white equally stunning number and then ending off her hour-long performance in a black gown.
Patrons in VIP and general admission were on their feet from the time Ross' name was announced by the emcee.
Ross made an iconic entrance onto the stage accompanied by the opening bars of her hit song "I'm Coming Out". Members of the audience greeted her with a loud uproar.
As occurred at the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay in January, Ross requested from the organisers that her image not be projected onto the three large screens set up at the venue. Far from the reaction she received in Jamaica when she was booed as a result of her request, patrons at the Plymouth Recreation Ground just danced and sang along to every song. There were sustained shouts for her to return to the stage after singing her final song "I Will Survive" but "The Boss" was gone.
Some of her other songs included "Baby Love", "Stop In The Name of Love", "Can't Hurry Love", "Touch Me In The Morning", "A Lovely Day", "It's My House", Upside Down" and "Why Do Fools Fall In Love".
NEW YORK — Iron Man, Marvel Studios' latest superhero flick, lured a superstar cast to its Big Apple premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival Monday night.

Motown superstar Diana Ross was back to doing what she does best this weekend, as she performed a selection of her greatest hits at a benefit concert in New York. The iconic Ain't No Mountain High Enough singer lead a roll call of big-hearted divas at the Big Apple's famous Radio City Music Hall.
Joining the music veteran at the Divas With Heart gig was fellow legend Gladys Knight. The Midnight Train To Georgia was clearly relishing her return to the spotlight, pointing victoriously to the cheering crowd and flashing a broad smile.
Also lending their star power to the event - which aimed to raise money for medical research - were multiple Grammy Award winner Chaka Khan and soul singer Patti LaBelle. Both of whom belted out renditions of their songs in true big-voiced diva style.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof got a little hotter than usual on May 6 when diva extraordinaire Diana Ross brought her next of kin to take in the moving family drama. The Big Mama of five brought along three of her brood, which includes quite a few performers (son Evan Ross starred in the film ATL and in the HBO film Life Support with sister Tracee; Tracee has appeared in Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls and youngest daughter Chudney is a model) all of whom were thrilled to meet the real life Cat stars. So what happens when one divine diva and company meet an equally stellar cast of proud performers?

Diana Ross Rains Supreme in New Book & Podcast
Diana Ross in Central Park – 25th Anniversary Retrospective
SAN FRANCISCO, June 15, 2008: It was 25 years ago this July when Diana Ross stepped onstage and into music history books and news headlines around the world for her battle against mother nature. Her two memorable concerts in New York’s Central Park gathered more than 600,000 fans to celebrate her Motown sounds along with a deluge of rain.
Author John W. Law takes a look back in his new book Diana Ross in Central Park: 25th Anniversary Retrospective (Aplomb Publishing 2008).
For Law, the book presented both a challenge and an opportunity. “For several years I was a reviewer of concerts, theater and film. In fact, I reviewed Diana Ross in concert a number of years ago, but I never intended on doing a book on Diana Ross or any topic in the music arena.”
Law’s writing normally focuses on film history, including several titles for Aplomb Publishing such as, Reel Horror, Curse of the Silver Screen and his 2008 book Master of Disaster: Irwin Allen - The Disaster Years. “With films I usually select projects where I feel comfortable and have something to contribute to a topic that I don’t feel has been covered before,” adds Law.
“With regards to Diana Ross, I had always been a fan, but I never felt I had anything to contribute to her as a topic or as an artist. She’s certainly had an amazing career, but her life and music has been well covered by so many different books. I didn’t feel I had anything unique to offer.”
However, Law came across a bootleg copy of the original 1983 show and recalled that the 25th anniversary of the famous concerts was approaching and so little has been focused on the topic. “Fans today still are frustrated that the event has never been released on DVD or CD,” says Law. And while the book comes nowhere close to delivering that, it makes an attempt to acknowledge the concerts as one of the biggest musical events of the 80s and gives fans a look back at a history-making show for Diana Ross.
“It was a really big event as the 80s go,” recalled Law. “Sure, we had Motown 25, We Are the World, and Live Aid, but Diana Ross’ Central Park shows really turned Diana Ross into an icon as a solo artist and set her apart from her history as a member of a girl group or as the leading songstress of Motown.”
The book looks back at the amazing career of Miss Ross leading up to the decision to perform in the park as part of a promotion of a new tour, a new album and an event to raise funds for a playground. What followed was a year-in-the-planning event that started off exactly as intended, but quickly changed course.
“The concert changed dramatically within about a half-hour and no one can forget the images of Diana Ross in a rainstorm atop a four-story stage. It was an amazing sight,” says Law. “She returned the following day, but cost and labor ate up all the funds for the playground and the publicity played out publicly for months afterwards.”
Now, fans can look back at the events from pre-planning through the aftermath and years that followed, offering a true retrospective of the shows.
In addition to the book, Law is also narrating a podcast on Apple’s iTunes called Reflections – a podcast looking back at the career and music of Diana Ross. The podcast is also available on the Aplomb Publishing website.
Published officially on July 21, 2008 – the 25th anniversary of her famous concert – and available in bookstores and online, “Diana Ross in Central Park – 25th Anniversary Retrospective” is a soft-cover, illustrated book that celebrates the career of Diana Ross through a two-day event that helped make her an icon. Legendary singer Diana Ross brought all the glitz and glamour of a Las Vegas show to an audience of more than 2,600 employees and their families of New York Hospital Queens.
"She sang songs from The Supremes, then went into the 70s (with her singles), and did Billie Holiday songs, and closed the show with 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough.' There were four costume changes. She was amazing," said NYHQ spokeswoman Cynthia Bacon.
The occasion was to celebrate the extraordinary scientific contributions of Judah Folkman, an internationally renowned medical researcher. Dr. Folkman was posthumously honored with the Pacesetter Award at the 13th annual Spring Night Gala - a fund-raiser for the hospital. The gala was held at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, in Manhattan, on June 2.

The LOVECharity bracelet has raised more than $2.24 million for 16 global charities since its inception two years ago.
The event was held at the Beverly Hills home of Maria and Bill Bell, where guests sipped Love Potion cocktails and Cartier champagne, and dined on sushi by Nobu. Renowed astrologer Karen Thorne provided Love astrology for guests. Performances included Diana Ross and 11-year-old R & B singer and actress Jamia Simone Nash.

Flushing, New York, June 3, 2008 – Last night, New York Hospital Queens, one of the largest medical institutions in the borough of Queens, raised $4 million with its 13th annual A Spring Night Gala, which took place at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. The evening included a private performance by 12-time Grammy Award winner Diana Ross.
More than 2,600 of New York Hospital Queens’ employees, family, and friends joined together to celebrate the late Judah Folkman, M.D., a towering figure in medical history and one of this century’s greatest cancer warriors. Dr. Folkman was posthumously awarded the Pacesetter Award, the hospital’s highest honor, for his extraordinary scientific contributions to cancer research.
Dr. Folkman’s involvement in cancer research began in the 1960s, when he observed that cancer tumors appeared to be surrounded by blood vessels that nourish their growth. The entire medical community thought the secrets to understanding cancer lay within the cancer cell itself. Dr. Folkman continued to look outside the cell and argued that it was possible to starve cancer cells to death by stopping blood vessel growth. Over the next 30 years, Dr. Folkman succeeded in identifying several proteins like the drug endostatin that inhibits blood vessel growth. Today, there is new hope for managing cancer and extending life.

Diana Ross was spotted shopping for a hair headband in Barney’s in uptown, NYC. For this small purchase she uses her Black American express card, which to be a card holder the minimum annual spending requirement is a cool $250,000 dollars, so perhaps Diana needs to aim a bit higher!

The show started 90 minutes late at 11.00 PM (sig!)...... we were seated at the long tables in the beautiful Salle des Etoiles for the dinner since 8.30.... so it was quite boring to wait for so long . When diana came out of course everybody jumped on their feet .
The sound was brilliant and to my advice Diana gave a wonderful performance in terms of repertoire and vocal abilities ..... She sang also BACK IN MY ARMS AGAIN and LADY SINGS MEDLEY that SHE DID NOT SANG in Carcassonne .
At one point during IT'S MY HOUSE she slipped on the flowers that people trew her on the stage and she felt on her knees and she continued to sing in that position until Fred White helped her to stand up ....she was very professional even if slightly injured , and after she recovered (few minutes later) she complained in very ironic way that no one gentlemans in the audience went to help her !
The Show lasted about 90 minutes(more or less) with no encores except a short reprise of I WILL SURVIVE at the end when Diana kicked off her golden sandals and danced barefoot ....This was the only exception to a very formal performance : she was happy to be there and artistically she gave 100%..... but my impression is that her heart and soul were not 100% there or maybe she was simply bored (or tired) because of the late hours..... By the way she acted very well in Monte Carlo : a serious PRO ;-)
Vasco Bruno

Carcassonne was a totally different experience and i believe it was a truly event for the people who attended the show : She sang many up-tempo tunes and everybody was dancing and singing , and the atmosphere was much more happier and hot ...except for the weather : it was such a windy and cold evening ...brrrr....Even Diana continued to ask to the audience if we were feeling cold but the crowd in the back shouted "NO" ! ;-) I was in the front row on the right of the stage and enjoied to see Diana so closely : she is still very BEAUTIFUL and still sexy on the Stage ;-) She walked from one point to the stage to another and even if she didn't shake any hands or touch anybody (except Andreas ( Website, Germany) who danced with her) she was very friendly and she looked genuinely happy to be there .
Carcassonne, France July 6th 2008
She talked a lot and at the end after I WILL SURVIVE she came back on the stage in a sort of day wear clothes , black pantacollant with a brown-black-white pull that she literally finished to wear on the stage while she sang I LOVE YOU as an encore . She said she gained weight (and of course everybody shouted NO!) and repeated more than once how great it was for her to perform in such a beautiful place ....and believe me it really was.... not only for her but also for all of us who enjoied the Show in a spectacular venue like the Theatre de la Cita¨ in Carcassonne : at one point i tought how much great would have been for her to give a performance there with a full orchestra ...... Small-medium theatres are the kind of venues that suits better her talent and her beauty .
I have seen Miss Ross in concert dozen of times during the last 25 yrs and i saw ( and felt) the difference between her Monte Carlo ' Show and the Carcassonne' Show .... but of course this is just my opinion , and i look forward to hear more from others who attended the Shows :-) Here's some links to short video clips from the concerts : (video 1) (video 2)

She came, she saw, she conquered! Diana Ross owned the stage Friday night at the Orange County Performing Arts Center's 35th annual Candlelight Concert. Looking every bit the diva, Ross took the 500 guests on a Motown journey through her Supreme days with "Baby Love" and "Stop! in the Name of Love" and continued by performing Top 10 hits like "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Touch Me in the Morning."
The dance floor was packed, and Segerstrom Hall, transformed into a 1970s Las Vegas supper club that covered the entire orchestra level seating with terraced platforms for the performance and dining, was the perfect setting.

The dance floor was packed, and Segerstrom Hall, transformed into a 1970s Las Vegas supper club that covered the entire orchestra level seating with terraced platforms for the performance and dining, was the perfect setting.
"We thought retro Vegas was the perfect theme with Diana Ross as our artist," event chairwoman Marta Bhathal said. Event chairwoman Pat Poss agreed for another reason: "Charlie and I were married in Las Vegas 50 years ago last August," she said, smiling. New OCPAC board Chairman Tom McKernan acknowledged the dynamic duo and their extensive committee, the center's board of directors, and board President Terry Dwyer and the center staff for, he said, "putting great art on our stages and really making a difference in classrooms around the region."
The Patina-catered four-course repast, with a Colorado rack of lamb and braised lamb shank entrée, was well-received as were the rectangular dinner tables featuring either red taffeta or mirrored tops with red suede and tufted bases adorned with round topiaries of Black Magic roses and burgundy carnations on silver pedestals, tall votive pillars with a gold patina and scattered faux rubies. Metal draperies lined the entire room, which featured huge Asian-inspired gold lampshade chandeliers with hanging tassels. Guy Genis and Bryan Wark of Eventmakers were credited with the transformation.
Event favors, courtesy of major sponsor Lugano Diamonds and Moti and Edit Ferder, included men's and women's Barton Perreira sunglasses by Lugano Diamonds with hand-set black and white diamonds, designed specifically for the event.
